Founded by Daniel Biasone in 1946, the Philadelphia 76ers (also known as the Sixers) is one of the most prominent franchises in the Philadelphia region. The Sixers had a prominent history with several players played for the organization in NBA history. The name ‘Philadelphia 76ers’ comes from the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, U.S. The Sixers won the NBA championship by 1967. 1946–1963: Syracuse Nationals
The Syracuse Nationals is one of the Midwest-based league’s easternmost teams. The Nationals started playing in the National Basketball League. The Syracuse Nationals would be beaten by the neighbor Rochester Royals in four games. The Syracuse Nationals were purchased by two Philadelphians in the spring of 1963.
1964/65
Once the National Basketball League returned to Philadelphia, the Philly’s biggest star returned. The sixers would finish the season posting a 40-40 record.
1965/66
The sixers post a 55-25 record. Instead of being rested the sixers seemed rusted.
1966/67
Led by a head coach named Alex Hannum, the sixers had a dream season. The Sixers beat the Celtics in five games in this period. The 1966–67 Sixers were considered as the best teams in league history.
1967–1976
The Sixers had the NBA’s best record for the third consecutive season. The sixers of 1972–73 are considered to be the worst team that ever played in the history of the National Basketball League. The Sixers acquired George McGinnis from the Indiana Pacers of the ABA in 1975–76.
1976–1987
In 1976–77, the sixers started an exciting ride for the fans of Philly beating their rival from Boston. And they defeated the Houston Rockets in six games. “We owe you one” was the 1977–78 motto.
1982–83 Season
In the year 1981, Harold Katz bought the sixers from Dixon. And the final championship puzzle was finished before the 1982–83 season. The Sixers went on to win their third NBA championship. The 1982–83 season marked the last championship in Philly until the Phillies won the 2008 World Series.
2000–01 Season
During this season, the Sixers won their first ten games. The Sixers went on to finish 56-26. The 2000–01 sixers featured the NBA’s MVP, Coach of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Sixth Man of the Year.
